Pittsburgh wasn't a hockey town. Or at least, they weren't an NHL sort of town. They'd had a team once before, the Pittsburgh Pirates, that only lasted five years before relocating for one season and then folding.

The New York Times, who had covered hockey since the very beginning, barely noticed when the new Pittsburgh franchise finally had a name. Little did they know that in less than twenty years, they'd be reporting on a young phenom named Mario Lemieux.
